RÚV reported on 27 September 2026 that atNorth’s proposed expansion at the foot of Hlíðarfjall would affect part of Bílaklúbbur Akureyrar’s camping area. The company told the broadcaster it was willing to help develop a replacement campsite.

According to the report, the planning council had deferred the expansion request at its latest meeting. Agreements with local clubs and responses from utilities were still outstanding. The report does not confirm a new public campsite, an opening date or visitor facilities.

Akureyri’s official visitor website lists Hamrar beside Kjarnaskógur at the southern end of town. Its operator describes the campsite as open throughout the year. Check the operator’s information for the facilities available during your visit.

The Hamrar website also states that the former Þórunnarstræti campsite is permanently closed. This is particularly useful if an older guidebook or saved map still points you there.
