Update: the main parking lot has reopened
Vatnajökull National Park confirmed on 8 October 2026 that paving at Jökulsárlón was complete and the main parking lot had reopened. Parking space markings were still outstanding when that announcement was published. This replaces the temporary closure information below; it is not a new closure on 21 October.
What the earlier notice covered
The original notice announced closure of the main lot from 2 to 7 October. During the work, visitors were directed to Eystri Fellsfjara and Vestri Fellsfjara, and tour participants were asked to allow extra walking time. Those were arrangements for the stated construction period.
Planning a visit now
Use the park’s current signs and visitor information when choosing where to park. The reopening announcement does not confirm availability of individual spaces, today’s road conditions or a tour meeting point. Check the meeting instructions supplied for your own activity.
