Choose your visit before buying a tower ticket

Hallgrímskirkja works well as a city stop even if you do not go up the tower. The church interior, the view from above and a service or concert are different reasons to come. Decide which matters to your group before fitting the visit between other plans.

Visit Reykjavík lists ordinary admission to the church as free, with a separate charge for the tower. This remains an active parish church, so sightseeing access can pause for worship and events. A concert has its own arrangements; do not assume an ordinary visit includes a performance. [3]

Read the dated calendar, not just the seasonal hours

On 23 October 2026, the church’s own page listed winter opening from 10:00 to 17:00, with final tower entry at 16:45. It also publishes exceptions for individual dates. Services, ceremonies, concerts and holidays can change access. Use the official opening calendar for your visit date. [1]

Read whether a notice concerns the nave, the tower or both. A church closure does not always mean the tower closes too. Our practical suggestion is to check before leaving your accommodation and again before committing to a return later in the day.

If you find conflicting times in a travel listing, start with the church’s dated notice. Allow a margin before final entry instead of making the last admission time your arrival target.

Buy tower tickets when the visit suits you

The church sells tower tickets in the shop on the left inside the lobby. Advance reservations are not available for individuals or groups, and each ticket permits one visit on the purchase date. The adult price shown on the official page when checked was 1,500 ISK. Confirm the current price and any concession at the shop. [1]

Look at the weather before paying if the panorama is your main reason to go up. A tower visit cannot guarantee a clear view. If visibility is poor, you may prefer the interior and a nearby café, or return during another confirmed opening. That is a planning choice rather than a forecast that the weather will improve.

The lift does not reach the final viewing platform

The church’s accessibility information says the nave is accessible to wheelchair users. The tower elevator reaches the eighth floor; a short staircase continues to the open air viewing platform on the ninth floor, which is not wheelchair accessible. [2]

If stairs affect anyone in your group, discuss the visit with staff before buying tickets. An elevator symbol alone does not explain the whole journey. Plan a comfortable meeting arrangement if some people visit the tower while others stay below, and ask staff about any assistance your group needs.

Give it a flexible place in your Reykjavík day

The official address is Hallgrímstorg 1. The church stands on Skólavörðuholt at the upper end of Skólavörðustígur, with cafés, shops and galleries along the street. The map marks the church area, not a parking entrance or an accessible approach. [2]

For a short city visit, choose the church and a nearby meal rather than adding several distant attractions. If you have more time, our Reykjavík walking guide connects the centre with the waterfront and a swimming pool. Keep those later stops adjustable so a queue or a service does not unsettle the whole day.

In wet weather, compare the indoor choices in our Reykjavík rainy day guide. A sightseeing closure is a good moment to move to your next confirmed stop. If you are driving onwards, leave time to consult Travel conditions and its official source links before departure.

Common questions

Do I need to buy a tower ticket to visit the church?

No. Ordinary church admission and the paid tower visit are separate. Check sightseeing access and any event arrangements for your date.

Is the tower suitable if I cannot manage stairs?

The final viewing platform requires stairs above the elevator stop. Speak to staff about what is accessible before deciding whether to buy a ticket.

Should I reserve the tower in advance?

The church does not offer advance tower reservations. Buy at the church shop when you are ready to visit.

Is there a guaranteed best time to go?

No single time guarantees visibility or an open interior. Match the dated calendar to your interests and keep the surrounding city plan flexible.
