Start with the season, not the photograph
Keldur is a historic farm site at Rangárvellir in South Iceland. Its turf buildings can make a useful cultural stop between landscape visits, but the interior is not presented as a year round attraction.
When checked on 24 October 2026, the National Museum of Iceland listed Keldur as open from 1 June to 31 August, daily from 10:00 to 17:00. Visit South Iceland showed the same season and hours and said that ordinary visitors can arrive during opening without advance booking. Use the National Museum page for your actual date before travelling. [1] [2]
An old photograph or an undated travel listing cannot confirm visitor access. Choose another confirmed heritage stop if the official page does not show an opening for your date.

Understand what survives at Keldur
The National Museum describes Keldur as the oldest existing farmhouse in Iceland and the only surviving farmhouse of the old passageway type. The structure uses stone, timber and turf, with parts traced to the late twelfth century. [1]
Keldur also appears in Njál’s Saga through its first named inhabitant, Ingjaldur Höskuldsson. The site connects that written history with a working landscape and a group of preserved buildings rather than presenting the past as a single detached object. [2]
An underground passage connects with the old farmhouse. The museum says it may have been built during conflict in the twelfth or thirteenth century. Treat that as the museum’s interpretation, not a reason to explore any unmarked opening independently. [1]
Plan the visit itself
Decide whether the interiors are the reason for your stop. If they are, protect the confirmed opening in your day and leave enough time to listen, look closely and ask questions. The regional tourism board lists guided visits during the summer season, but schedules can change. Check the current museum information rather than building a day around an old timetable. [2]
The map below marks the general Keldur site using the coordinate published by Visit South Iceland. It is not a parking entrance, a walking route or permission to enter any building or field. Follow signs and staff directions when you arrive. [2]
Wear layers suitable for moving between buildings and outdoor ground. The photograph was made in May 2012 and cannot tell you what the paths, doors or weather will be like on your visit. If mobility or access is important, contact the museum about the particular parts of the site you hope to see.
Give Keldur a clear place in your route
Keldur works best when historic buildings are a genuine priority, not an extra pin squeezed between waterfalls. The official address is Keldur at Rangárvellir, 851 Hella. Save the destination supplied by the museum and do not navigate from a photograph or an approximate tourism map. [1]
For another South Coast history stop, our Skógar Museum guide explains the indoor collections and open air buildings at Skógar. The two places answer different questions: Keldur centres on one historic farm site with a short summer opening season, while Skógar brings several collections together.
If landscape is your main interest, use our Skógafoss guide to choose the waterfall base, viewpoint or a longer trail. Keep each visit optional enough to respond to conditions. Check Travel conditions and its official links before driving, then confirm the road again with Umferðin. [3] [4]
Common questions
Is Keldur open all year?
The official visitor pages checked on 24 October 2026 list opening from 1 June to 31 August. Check the National Museum page for your date and do not assume interior access outside that season.
Can I arrive without booking?
Visit South Iceland says ordinary visitors can arrive during the listed opening hours without advance booking. Groups and anyone seeking a particular guided visit should confirm current arrangements.
